Fifty Words by Michael Weller

Directed by Andrew Thornton with Renee Garvens and Tim Vaggoner

THE STORY: While their nine-year-old son is away for the night on his first sleepover, Adam and Jan have an evening alone together, their first in years. Adam’s attempt to seduce his wife before he leaves on business the next day begins a suspenseful nightlong roller-coaster ride of revelation, rancor, passion and humor that explores a modern-day marriage on the verge of either a breakup or deepening love and understanding. The NY Times describes Michael Weller as “a bold and productive dramatist.”

May 10-27 2012

God of Carnage by Jasmina Reza

Directed by Roberto Prestigiacomo

THE STORY: A playground altercation between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of Brooklyn parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters. Winner of the 2009 Tony Award. “A study in the tension between civilized surface and savage instinct, this play is itself a satisfyingly primitive entertainment.” —NY Times.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? By Edward Albee

Directed by Roberto Prestigiacomo

THE STORY: George, a professor at a small college, and his wife, Martha, have just returned home, drunk from a Saturday night party. Martha announces that she has invited a young couple to stop by for a nightcap. When they arrive the charade begins. The drinks flow and suddenly inhibitions melt. It becomes clear that Martha is determined to seduce the young professor, and George couldn’t care less. But underneath the edgy banter, lurks an undercurrent of secrets and despair that is the foundation for their relationship. Winner of the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play. The Broadway production of this play was a shattering and memorable experience and proclaimed the author as a major American playwright.

ARFORUM

FORUM is AtticRep’s public meeting place, on stage and on the web, for open discussion where our community and artsits converge and join the conversation around social, intellectual, and artistic issues. FORUM bring together visual artists, film-makers, musicians, dancers, actors, and directors from San Antonio to collaborate on the development of the Forum Theatre Project, the creation of performances for the Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema, and Luminaria. Additionally, FORUM is a laboratory where young artists from our community can work toward devising performance pieces, and even start their own theatre company.

Forum Theatre Project: On Breast Cancer – A Theatre for Social Change Initiative (March 8, 9 @ 8pm. 2012)

The Forum Theatre Project returns to present a topic as timely as its three predecessors, Facing San Antonio’s Homeless, Borders and Walls, and On Love and Marriage. Actor, Renee Garvens has spent the last several years interviewing women affected by the ravages of breast cancer. These first-hand accounts of living, dying, surviving and coping with the disease will come together to form an intimate portrait and a very personal platform for dialogue. Developed in the style of Augusto Boal’s community-based theatre philosophies, this year’s Forum is the next step in the evolution of AtticRep’s Forum Theatre Project. This even is FREE.
